FAQ: Work Days

FAQ is an abbreviation for Frequently Asked Questions.

Description
Every hunt club has to clear trails and build jumps, every year. (This process is also refered to as "paneling.") Some clubs have sufficient professional staff to do part of the job but most clubs rely on volunteer labor.

Local variations
For at least twenty years, Rockbridge Hunt has scheduled work days on Sunday afternoons in August. This is the logical time to get ready for hunting season but it can be brutally hot. We try to schedule at least one Saturday morning session. And the Hunt Staff are happy to schedule a session at you convenience. There's always plenty to do!

Procedures
Generally, we'll meet at a fixture at a specific time. From there we'll split into smaller groups. There's got to be one person with each group who knows the territory. And it's helpful if there's one chain saw in each group. If you need to leave at a specific time, be sure you announce that at the beginning of the session.

Suggestions
Wear work gloves. Leather gloves are preferable for dealing with thorns. Long sleeves are recommended for the same reason. It will be hot. A lot of the work takes place in the woods but you may want a hat, sunscreen, and/or sunglasses. You may want to carry water with you. We'll have coolers with bottled water on the trucks but you may be working away from the vehicles for quite awhile.

BUGS!
Please be aware of the increase in the incidence of Lyme disease in our region. Insect repellent is recommended. At the end of the day, be sure to check carefully for ticks (with or without soundtrack).
